Seoul Travel Series - Baek Nyeon Baekse Ginseng Chicken Soup

One of the best experiences in Korea was my indulgence in these three piping hot bowls of ginseng chicken soup. After my visit to the hospital in korea,  the home owner recommended Baek Nyeon after I said that I haven't got to try the korean ginseng soup. Baek Nyeon Baekse Ginseng Chicken Soup (Baengnyeon Samgyetang) is a traditional Korean casual restaurant that specialises in various types of Ginseng Chicken Soup.  Popular among the locals, Baek Nyeon Baekse Ginseng Chicken Soup is just a 5 minutes walk from Hongik University subway station exit 9. Check out this place as you roam around the outskirts of the Hongdae area.

Jeonbok Samgyetang / Wild Cultivated Ginseng Chicken Soup With Abalone (KRW ₩20000 / SGD $25)

This is a premium dish that uses wildly cultivated ginseng and naturally raised chicken. There are approximately 40 ingredients in the samgye-tang, including gingko, jujube, glutinous rice, fruit sauce, and others. The soup is simmered for a long period to bring forth the natural flavours of the ingredients, making it rich in flavours. The paradox is that the long hours of brewing minimizes the fat content, giving it a superb light and clean taste.

Deulkkye Samgyetang / Ginseng Chicken Soup With Perilla Seed (KRW ₩15000 / S$19)

The perilla seed is a superseed staple in korea and is well-known for its high omega-3 fatty acid. One serving gives approximately 5 grams of fibre and adds a nutty, milky thickness to many soups, stews, and vegetable dishes in Korean cuisine.

Heungmaneul Samgyetang / Black Garlic Ginseng Chicken Soup (KRW ₩16000 / S$20)

The soup was dark and warns of the strong garlic taste that may just turn some people off. However, I'm a great garlic fan and I loved how they were so generous with the ingredients. It's definitely a must-have soup in winter.

Side Dishes

Kkakdugi is made of cubed Korean radish (mu)—and is prepared with about the same ingredients and in the same way as baechu kimchi. It goes great with almost anything, but it is a traditional accompaniment to seolleongtang, a milky-white soup made from ox bones and brisket.
